2024 | Skills Specialisation Project

February - May 2024

A wanted thief tries sneaking out a bar. Hijinks ensue!

Using dialogue from “The Three Stooges: Disorder in the Court” (1936), and Winnie the Pooh as a basis for character inspiration, this assessment involved me making a short animation as a specific skill specialisation focus.

Although the primary objective was to make an animation, as I also want to dabble in Pre-Production areas in the animation pipeline (i.e. Character and Environment Design), I decided to also tried focusing on those aspects as well.

This was an individual project, so I was responsible for all aspects in the pipeline.

Concept Designs

Below contains various concept work for my project. Includes Environment concepts and designs, Character sheets and poses, and final renders.

Previous Iterations

Although the core shots and progression remained the same, there were a lot of changes to the animation composition-wise. This included making shots feel more dynamic, changing the movement of certain objects (such as the hat flying), and adding in shots for better context of surroundings.

Version 1 (Top)

The first proper animatic iteration. It had more flat angles, lacked the original introduction of Fraude running away from the establishment, and significantly different angle where the bee gets hit and sequence where Boss Bea grabs Fraude at the end.

Version 2.5 (Bottom)

Second iteration of the animatic. Has a lot of the angles changed to the final version, animation blocked out with some inbetweens, and has the ending sequence changed to be more of a slight chase. Most notably is the tighter pacing and the lack of ending dialogue (which was altered in the final version so the pacing is better, and having the ending dialogue allowed the animation to feel more whole).

Side-by-Side Comparisons

Above contains Side-by-Side comparisons between the original “Version 1” animatic and the final Animation, showcasing the different angles, changes in timing, and removal of certain aspects (like characters).

The first row are all from the original “Version 1” animatic, and the bottom row contains the final animation.
